Fargo Hospice Volunteer Opportunities

A volunteer with clerical skills can serve a hospice center by helping in the office with simple administrative duties. These duties include writing sympathy cards, helping with mailings and performing data entry.

An art enrichment volunteer would provide comfort, entertainment or distraction to hospice patients and families through art.

Work closely with the hospice’s professional bereavement staff. These volunteers assist in duties such as working as a support group facilitator or helping with mailings to clients and families.

Assist Sanford Hospice staff with delivering necessary supplies to hospice patients in their homes. Volunteers must have own transportation a valid driver’s license and current insurance.

Many hospice patients are unable to leave their home to go to a salon or barber to get a haircut. We are in need of licensed cosmologists or barbers who can provide styling or haircuts in their home.

An Integrative Health volunteer provides relaxing and anxiety reducing therapies at end of life through professional services such as Reiki, Healing Touch, or aromatherapy.

Must be licensed.

Hospice volunteers record and transcribe patient life stories, and memories which can be shared for generations. The volunteer typically makes several visits to the patient’s home and will facilitate the telling of the patients’ life story which will be recorded on a digital recorder. Once the visits are complete the volunteer will type the story, add pictures and present the finished project to the patient. The volunteer can also write letters to a patients’ loved ones or other requests.

This program utilizes licensed Pet Therapy dogs and their handlers as a therapeutic modality to enhance the emotional, physical, cognitive, and social function of hospitalized patients. Sanford requires certification through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs or Therapy Dogs International.

Volunteers currently licensed in massage therapy provide therapeutic massages to patients.

Music therapy creates an environment that reduces stress, anxiety and connects patients with favorite memories. Share your talents either in song or musical instruments which will enhance the quality of life of the patients we serve. Music therapy can be done either in the patient’s home or our Hospice House.

Volunteers assist with shopping, household maintenance or giving family caregivers a chance to take care of necessary errands and get away from the house. Family members also appreciate a visit from a compassionate friend who understands what they are going through.

Visit with hospice patients in the home of the patient whether it be a private residence, assisted living facility or nursing home their home or our hospice house which is located in the Sanford Broadway Hospital. Volunteers can do a wide variety of activities with patients that help bring meaning and quality in their end stages of life. These volunteers can provide companionship, hand massages, playing games or cards, helping with simple chores, reading out loud or watching movies. We will attempt to match volunteers and families so that time spent is valuable for both. Companions do not do personal care or administer medications.

Sanford Hospice is looking for professional photographers to capture portraits of our hospice patients and their families. Volunteers also might be asked to attend special events, such as a Veteran Pinning’s ceremony to photograph the patients and provide them with a photo to document the day. These photos are a treasured gift to a hospice patient’s family. All volunteers must have their own equipment.

Sanford Hospice is part of the We Honor Veterans Program and we are looking for Veterans who would like to visit with our hospice patients who are also veterans. Many veterans receiving hospice care appreciate contact with volunteer who are also veterans even if they served in a different time or place.
