Bismarck Hospice Volunteer Opportunities

A volunteer with clerical skills can serve a hospice center by helping in the office with simple administrative duties. These duties include writing sympathy cards, helping with mailings and performing data entry.

An art enrichment volunteer provides comfort, entertainment or distraction to hospice patients and their families through art.

These volunteers work closely with the hospice’s professional bereavement staff. They assist in duties such as working as a support group facilitator or assisting with mailings to clients and families.

Assist our hospice team with delivering necessary supplies to hospice patients in their homes. Volunteers must have their own transportation, a valid driver’s license and up-to-date insurance.

Many hospice patients are unable to leave home to go to a salon or barbershop to get a haircut. We need licensed cosmologists or barbers who can provide styling or haircuts to patients in their homes.

An integrative health volunteer provides relaxing and anxiety-reducing therapies to end-of-life patients through Reiki, Healing Touch or aromatherapy.

Volunteers must be licensed.

Legacy volunteers preserve patients’ stories and memories. They make several visits to a patient’s home, facilitate the telling of their life story and record it using a digital recorder. Once the visits are complete, the volunteer will transcribe the story, add pictures and present the finished project to the patient. The volunteer can also write letters to a patient’s loved ones or complete other requests.

These volunteers provide therapeutic massages to patients. Volunteers must be licensed in massage therapy.

Music therapy creates an environment that reduces stress and anxiety while connecting patients to their favorite memories. Share your talents either through song or musical instruments to enhance our patients’ quality of life. Music therapy can be done in the patient’s home or at a hospice location.

Hospice volunteers can help by staying with the patient while their caregivers take care of necessary errands. Caregivers also appreciate a visit from a compassionate friend who understands what they’re going through.

Visit with hospice patients where they’re at, whether it be a private residence, assisted living facility or nursing home. Volunteers can do a wide variety of activities to brighten a patient’s day. These volunteers can provide companionship, play games or cards, help with simple chores, read out loud or watch movies. We work to match volunteers and families so that the time volunteers spend is valuable for everyone. Visitor volunteers do not do personal care or administer medications.

Provide joy to hospice patients and their families through pet therapy.

Pet certification and vaccination are required.

Sanford Hospice is looking for professional photographers to capture portraits of our hospice patients and their families. Volunteers also may be asked to attend special events, such as veteran pinning ceremonies to photograph patients and provide them a document of the day. These photos are a treasured gift to a hospice patient’s family.

All volunteers must have their own equipment.

As part of the We Honor Veterans Program, we’re looking for veterans who would like to visit with our veteran patients. Many veterans receiving hospice care appreciate connecting with volunteers who are also veterans, even if they served in a different time or place.
