In 2021, we announced a landmark Virtual Care Initiative as part of our commitment to transform health care for patients living in rural and underserved areas. By expanding our services in the places we call home, we’re embodying our vision to be the premier rural health system in the U.S.

Sanford Virtual Care Center

The Sanford Virtual Care Center (VCC) is a part of our $350 million Virtual Care Initiative. The VCC offers a direct connection to our satellite clinics, giving patients the option to get the care they need in person with more resources and expertise available virtually.

Located in the VCC, the Innovation Center is a dedicated space for teams focused on research and development.

The VCC also has an Education Institute that provides education and training opportunities to health care professionals across the region. The Education Institute helps caregivers provide a seamless virtual care experience to their patients.

Inside the Sanford Virtual Care Center

Innovation Center

The Innovation Center at the VCC is home to four cores, including:

  • Innovations and commercialization – This team focuses on improving health care by engaging with employees to identify challenges and develop solutions for patients and providers.
  • Digital experience – This team helps define, understand and shape the patient experience across digital channels.
  • Remote patient monitoring – Through an on-site inpatient hospital room, we test virtual systems that provide patients and staff with cutting-edge technology that can support care.
  • Innovation makerspace – This space is equipped with everything innovators need to create novel technologies, develop prototypes, transform existing devices and advance health care technology.

Education Institute

The Education Institute is a dynamic learning environment where health care professionals can build new skills to enhance both care quality and patient experience.

It offers a variety of flexible high-impact learning spaces designed to support clinical education, simulation and interprofessional collaboration. Areas in the Education Institute include:
