What is Family Medicine?
Family medicine providers and physicians offer primary care services to people of all ages. They are your go-to experts for the care your family needs, from routine checkups to treatment for a wide range of health concerns and conditions. When you need to see a specialist, they’ll connect you to other physicians at Sanford Health and coordinate your care.
See a family medicine provider for:
Wellness visits
Your provider will want to see you once a year for a checkup. T his visit helps keep you living at your healthiest. Your provider will assess your overall health and potential health risks, review and discuss preventive screenings, check vital signs and order any needed lab test to screen for conditions like high cholesterol or diabetes.
Well child visits support your child’s health as they grow. These visits monitor your child’s development, keep them up to date on immunizations and give you expert guidance on topics from nutrition to sleep. Infants and young children should follow the well child visit schedule to stay on track with checkups at key milestones. Children ages 3 and older should see their provider annually.
Office visits
Schedule an office visit to discuss a new or ongoing health concern with your provider, such as cold and flu symptoms, allergies or urinary tract infections (UTIs). Your provider will assess your symptoms and create a treatment plan to help you get well. You can schedule these visits as often as you need them and your provider may be able to see you the same day.
Many of our family medicine providers offer comprehensive women’s health care for every stage of life, including cancer screenings, reproductive and pregnancy care.Find a Family Medicine Provider Near You

What is the Difference Between Family Medicine and Internal Medicine?
Family medicine physicians and internists are both primary care providers who focus on long-term health, overall wellness and disease prevention.
Family medicine providers care for children and adults and offer a wide range of services, from well child visits to pregnancy care and treatment for sports injuries. By partnering with a family medicine provider, your whole family can see the same provider for care.
Internal medicine providers, also known as internists, specialize in medical care for adults. They focus on preventing, diagnosing and managing disease and chronic conditions. By partnering with an internist, you can see a specialist for everyday care and chronic condition management.
