Pharmacogenetics

What is pharmacogenetics?

Pharmacogenetics, also called pharmacogenomics, is the study of how genes impact the way our bodies process medications.

A simple genetic test can tell you which medications may work for you with the fewest side effects. With the power of PGx, your care team can develop a completely customized medication plan for you.

Why should I get PGx testing?

Pharmacogenetic testing may be helpful for those who:

  • Have a history of, or are currently experiencing, medication side effects
  • Have a history of taking medications that did not work
  • Would like to learn which medications to avoid and which they may not respond to as expected

The results of your PGx test will give your pharmacist and primary care provider valuable information that can help them decide which medications will work best for you and with the fewest side effects.

How do I schedule a PGx appointment?

After you talk with your provider about your medications and pharmacogenetic testing, they can refer you to the PGx team. Alternatively, you can call (605) 404-4000 to make an appointment for yourself.

What can I expect at my PGx appointment?

During your appointment, your care team will:

  • Gather personal and family medical history
  • Review current and past medications and how they worked for you
  • Discuss the way your body processes medications
  • Review the benefits and limitations of PGx testing
  • Provide guidance on medications and dosing

Your appointment may be in-person or virtual. Some patients meet with the team once, while others may need additional visits.
